Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Divide the percent by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 250 is 0.15 × 250 = 37.5.
How do I find what percent one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 30 out of 120 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
How is percent change worked out?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the price by 1 plus the VAT rate. With 15% VAT, a price of 200 becomes 200 × 1.15 = 230. Tap VAT 15% to do it instantly.
How do I take a discount off a price?
Multiply the price by 1 minus the discount. A 20% discount on 500 gives 500 × 0.8 = 400.
Why is a 10% rise then a 10% fall not back to the start?
The fall is worked out on the bigger, raised number. 100 rises to 110, and 10% of 110 is 11, so it falls to 99.
