Frequently Asked Questions

What are the PAYE rates in Ghana for 2026?

From 1 September 2026 (Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2026, Act 1178) the monthly bands are: first GH₵ 588 tax-free, next GH₵ 80 at 5%, next GH₵ 100 at 10%, next GH₵ 2,900 at 17.5%, next GH₵ 16,000 at 25%, next GH₵ 30,332 at 30%, and 35% above GH₵ 50,000. Pay for January to August 2026 used the older bands, which started with GH₵ 490 tax-free.

What is SSNIT and how much is deducted?

SSNIT is Ghana’s social security pension. You pay 5.5% of your basic salary and your employer adds 13%, making 18.5% in total. Your 5.5% comes off before PAYE is worked out. For 2026, contributions are charged on basic salary up to GH₵ 69,000 a month.

Are allowances and bonuses taxed?

Cash allowances such as transport, rent or fuel are added to taxable income, but SSNIT is only charged on basic salary. Bonuses up to 15% of your annual basic salary are taxed at a flat 5%; any bonus above that is added to your income and taxed at the normal bands.

What is Tier 3 pension?

Tier 3 is a voluntary pension. Contributions of up to 16.5% of your income are deducted before PAYE, so they lower your tax. Tier 1 and Tier 2 are covered by the 18.5% SSNIT contribution.

Is this an official GRA calculator?

No. This is an estimate, not official tax advice. It uses the published GRA and SSNIT rates, but overtime rules, reliefs and your employer’s payroll can change the figure, so always check your payslip or ask HR.

Does it work for yearly salaries?

Yes. Switch Pay Period to Yearly and enter your annual figures. PAYE is worked out monthly, as GRA does, and multiplied by 12.
