Frequently Asked Questions
What are the federal tax brackets for 2026?
For single filers in 2026: 10% up to $12,400 of taxable income, 12% to $50,400, 22% to $105,700, 24% to $201,775, 32% to $256,225, 35% to $640,600 and 37% above. Married filing jointly brackets are roughly double. The standard deduction is $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly and $24,150 head of household.
How much are Social Security and Medicare in 2026?
Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare tax above $200,000 (single or head of household) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). Your employer matches 6.2% and 1.45%.
Which states are included?
California, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina and Michigan income tax are included, plus Texas, Florida and the other states with no wage income tax. For other states, state tax is not included. Local taxes such as New York City or Pennsylvania local earned income tax are not included.
How does a 401(k) change my take-home pay?
Traditional 401(k) contributions come off before federal income tax (and most state taxes, but not Pennsylvania), up to $24,500 in 2026 if you are under 50. They do not reduce Social Security or Medicare.
Why might my paycheck be different?
This is an estimate of yearly tax owed, not a W-4 withholding calculation. Credits (such as the Child Tax Credit), the new tips and overtime deductions, itemized deductions, health premiums and local taxes are not included. California uses its 2025 tax schedules until the 2026 ones are published.
Is this an official IRS calculator?
No. This is an estimate, not official tax advice. It uses the IRS 2026 brackets and published state rates in a simplified way. For withholding, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator or ask a tax professional.
