Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Australian tax rates for 2026-27?
For residents from 1 July 2026: $0 to $18,200 is tax-free, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000 and 45% above $190,000. The 15% rate replaced 16% on 1 July 2026 and is legislated to fall to 14% from 1 July 2027.
How is the Medicare levy worked out?
Most residents pay 2% of taxable income. Low-income singles pay less: no levy up to $28,011 and a reduced levy of 10% of the amount above that up to $35,013. These are the latest thresholds the ATO has published (for 2025-26); the 2026-27 thresholds are normally set later, so the reduction may be slightly different. The Medicare levy surcharge for people without private hospital cover is not included.
How much is the HELP repayment?
For 2026-27 nothing is repaid on income up to $69,528. Above that you repay 15 cents per dollar up to $129,717 and 17 cents per dollar above, but never more than 10% of your total repayment income. This calculator uses your salary as repayment income; reportable super, fringe benefits and investment losses can raise it.
What does the tax-free threshold option do?
Most people claim the tax-free threshold from their main employer. If you untick it (for a second job), the calculator taxes every dollar from 15% and skips the low income tax offset, as a rough guide to what is withheld. Your real tax is settled when you lodge your return.
Is super taken out of my pay?
No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by your employer on top of your salary and is shown as an employer cost. If your package is quoted including super, divide it by 1.12 to get the salary to enter.
Is this an official ATO calculator?
No. This is an estimate, not tax advice. It uses published ATO rates but ignores deductions, other offsets and your full tax position, so check with the ATO or a registered tax agent.
