Frequently Asked Questions
Is there income tax on salaries in the UAE?
No. The UAE does not tax employment income, so salaries are paid without income tax. The 9% corporate tax and 5% VAT apply to businesses and purchases, not to your salary.
What is deducted from an expat salary?
Usually only the Involuntary Loss of Employment (ILOE) premium, which you pay yourself: AED 5 a month if your basic salary is AED 16,000 or less, or AED 10 a month above that, plus VAT. Expats do not pay into GPSSA. End-of-service gratuity is paid by the employer when you leave and is not a monthly deduction.
How much pension does a UAE national pay?
Under Federal Decree-Law No. 57 of 2023, Emiratis who start work on or after 31 October 2023 pay 11% of their contribution salary and the employer pays 15%. In the private sector the government pays 2.5% of the employer share when the contribution salary is below AED 20,000. The contribution salary is between AED 3,000 and AED 70,000 a month. Emiratis registered before 31 October 2023 stay on the older law: 5% employee, 12.5% employer and 2.5% government.
Which salary is the pension charged on?
For private-sector employees the law uses the salary set in the employment contract, which this calculator takes as basic plus housing plus other allowances. Your employer or GPSSA may define your contribution salary differently, so check your GPSSA statement.
Does it cover Abu Dhabi, government jobs or GCC nationals?
No. Abu Dhabi uses its own pension fund (ADPF), federal government jobs have different caps, and GCC nationals pay under their home country’s scheme. This calculator models the federal GPSSA private-sector rules only.
Is this an official GPSSA calculator?
No. This is an estimate, not official advice. It uses the published federal rates, but your contract, sector and registration date can change the result, so check with your HR team or GPSSA.
