Frequently Asked Questions
What are the PAYE rates in Zambia for 2026?
The monthly bands used by ZRA for 2026 are: first K5,100 tax-free, K5,100.01 to K7,100 at 20%, K7,100.01 to K9,200 at 30%, and 37% above K9,200. Yearly, that is K61,200 tax-free, then 20% to K85,200, 30% to K110,400 and 37% above. These bands have applied since 1 January 2024 and were not changed by the 2026 Budget.
How much is NAPSA?
NAPSA is the national pension scheme. You pay 5% of your monthly earnings and your employer adds another 5%. For 2026, contributions stop at an earnings ceiling of K37,236 a month, so the most each side pays is K1,861.80 a month. NAPSA does not reduce your PAYE: since 2018 pension contributions are not deducted before tax.
How much is NHIMA?
NHIMA (National Health Insurance) is 1% of your basic salary from you and 1% from your employer, with no ceiling. Allowances are not included. It is taken after tax and does not reduce PAYE.
What is the Skills Development Levy?
Employers pay a Skills Development Levy of 0.5% of gross emoluments to ZRA. It is an employer cost and must not be deducted from your pay. Some employers, such as government and small businesses below the turnover threshold, are exempt.
Is this an official ZRA calculator?
No. This is an estimate, not official tax advice. It uses published ZRA, NAPSA and NHIMA rates, but bonuses, gratuities, benefits in kind and your employer’s payroll can change the figure, so check your payslip or ask ZRA or your HR team. The 2026 NAPSA ceiling is taken from published summaries of the NAPSA notice, as NAPSA’s own page could not be checked.
Does it work for yearly salaries?
Yes. Switch Pay Period to Yearly and enter your annual figures. PAYE is worked out monthly, as employers do, and multiplied by 12.
