Frequently Asked Questions
What are the income tax rates in Japan?
National income tax runs from 5% on taxable income up to ¥1,949,000 to 45% above ¥40 million, plus a 2.1% reconstruction surtax on the tax. Resident tax adds about 10% of taxable income (4% prefectural and 6% municipal) plus a per-capita levy of ¥5,000 including the forest environment tax.
What changed for 2026?
The 2026 tax reform raised the minimum employment income deduction to ¥740,000 and the basic deduction to ¥1,040,000 for total income up to ¥4.89 million (¥670,000 up to ¥6.55 million, ¥620,000 above). The new amounts take effect on 1 December 2026 and are settled in the year-end adjustment, so monthly withholding earlier in 2026 was higher. This calculator shows the full-year result with the new amounts.
How much social insurance is deducted?
Using Kyokai Kenpo (Tokyo) rates for 2026: health insurance 9.85% (11.47% with long-term care at ages 40 to 64), the new child and child-rearing support levy 0.23% from April 2026, and employees’ pension 18.3%, each split half and half with your employer. Employment insurance is 0.5% for employees in general businesses from April 2026. Health insurance rates differ by prefecture and by health insurance society.
Why is resident tax an estimate?
Resident tax is charged from June on the previous year’s income, so in your first year in Japan you usually pay none. This calculator estimates it as if this year’s pay were the basis, using the standard 10% rate, the ¥430,000 basic deduction and the minimum ¥2,500 adjustment deduction. Municipal non-taxable limits and the deduction rules for low incomes vary, so low-income results may differ.
What is simplified?
Social insurance is worked out on your actual pay, within the minimum and maximum standard monthly remuneration, rather than on the exact grade from the table, and the bonus is treated as one payment. Dependant and spouse deductions, life insurance, iDeCo, furusato nozei, commuting allowance and the reconstruction surtax reduction from 2027 are not included.
Is this an official calculator?
No. This is an estimate, not tax advice. It uses published National Tax Agency, Kyokai Kenpo and Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare rates, but your payslip will differ, so check with your employer, the NTA or your city office.
