Frequently Asked Questions
What are the NZ tax rates for 2026-27?
The rates in force since 1 April 2025 still apply: 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% from $15,601 to $53,500, 30% from $53,501 to $78,100, 33% from $78,101 to $180,000 and 39% above $180,000.
What is the ACC earners’ levy?
It funds accident cover for non-work injuries. For 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 it is 1.75% of earnings (including GST) up to $156,641, so the most you pay is $2,741.22.
How much KiwiSaver is deducted in 2026?
From 1 April 2026 the default employee rate rose from 3% to 3.5%, and employers must match with 3.5%. You can choose 4%, 6%, 8% or 10% instead, or apply for a temporary rate reduction to 3%; in that case your employer may also contribute 3%, which this calculator assumes. Employer contributions are taxed with ESCT before they reach your account.
How is the student loan repayment worked out?
You repay 12 cents for every dollar you earn above $24,128 a year (the threshold is frozen for 2026-27). Repayments are taken from each pay; this calculator spreads them evenly over the year.
What is the independent earner tax credit (IETC)?
If your income is between $24,000 and $66,000 you can get $520 a year off your tax, reducing by 13 cents per dollar above $66,000 until it reaches zero at $70,000. You cannot get it if you or your partner receive Working for Families, NZ Super or certain benefits, so it is off by default.
Is this an official IRD calculator?
No. This is an estimate, not tax advice. It works out the full-year figures from published IRD rates; your PAYE per pay, secondary tax codes and other credits can differ, so check with Inland Revenue (IRD).
