Frequently Asked Questions

What are the PAYE rates in Tanzania for 2026?

For resident employees, monthly taxable pay up to TSh 270,000 is tax-free. Pay from TSh 270,000 to 520,000 is taxed at 8%, 520,000 to 760,000 at 20%, 760,000 to 1,000,000 at 25%, and anything above TSh 1,000,000 at 30%. These TRA bands have applied since July 2023 and were not changed by the Finance Act 2026.

How much is NSSF in Tanzania?

The total NSSF contribution is 20% of your wage. Your share can be at most 10%, so the usual splits are 10% employee and 10% employer, or 5% employee and 15% employer. Your employer may also pay the full 20% itself. We found no upper limit on the wage NSSF is charged on.

Is NSSF deducted before PAYE?

Yes. Your own statutory NSSF contribution is taken off your pay before PAYE is worked out, so it lowers your tax.

What are SDL and WCF?

The Skills Development Levy is 3.5% of gross pay on Tanzania Mainland and the Workers Compensation Fund contribution is 0.5% of gross pay. Both are paid by the employer, not taken from your salary. Some employers, such as government bodies, charities and farms, are exempt from SDL.

Is this an official TRA calculator?

No. This is an estimate, not official tax advice. It uses published TRA, NSSF and WCF rates, but benefits in kind, public service pension schemes (PSSSF) and your employer’s payroll can change the figure, so check your payslip or ask the Tanzania Revenue Authority.

Does it work for Zanzibar or non-residents?

No. It covers resident employees on Tanzania Mainland. Zanzibar has its own revenue authority and pension fund, and non-resident employees are taxed at a flat 30%.
