Frequently Asked Questions

What are the new regime tax slabs for 2026-27?

Under the new regime (the default), income up to ₹4 lakh is tax-free, then 5% up to ₹8 lakh, 10% up to ₹12 lakh, 15% up to ₹16 lakh, 20% up to ₹20 lakh, 25% up to ₹24 lakh and 30% above that. Salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, and a rebate of up to ₹60,000 means no tax is payable if taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Budget 2026 kept these slabs for tax year 2026-27, the first year under the Income-tax Act 2025.

Should I choose the new or the old regime?

The old regime has higher rates (5%, 20% and 30% after ₹2.5 lakh) but lets you claim deductions such as 80C investments (up to ₹1.5 lakh, including your EPF), a ₹50,000 standard deduction, HRA and home-loan interest. The new regime has lower rates and a ₹75,000 standard deduction but almost no deductions. Switch the Tax Regime option to compare both for your salary; this calculator only models 80C in the old regime, so if you also claim HRA, 80D or home-loan interest the old regime may come out better than shown.

How is EPF worked out?

You and your employer each contribute 12% of your basic salary plus DA. Contributions are compulsory on wages up to the EPF wage ceiling, which rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026. Many employers contribute on the full basic salary instead, so choose the option that matches your payslip. Part of the employer’s 12% goes to the pension scheme (EPS).

What are surcharge and cess?

A 4% Health and Education Cess is added to your income tax. If your taxable income is above ₹50 lakh a surcharge applies too: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore and 25% above ₹2 crore (37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only). Marginal relief stops the surcharge from costing more than the income above each threshold.

Is this an official income tax calculator?

No. This is an estimate, not official tax advice. It uses the published slabs, rebates and EPF rates, but your employer’s TDS, exemptions such as HRA and LTA, professional tax and other deductions can change the figure. Check your Form 16 or payslip, or use the Income Tax Department’s own calculator at incometax.gov.in.

What is not included?

Professional tax (it depends on your state), HRA and LTA exemptions, 80D, 80CCD and home-loan deductions, employer NPS contributions, perquisites, EPF administration and EDLI charges, and the tax on capital gains or other income are not included. Salaries for the whole year use the ₹25,000 EPF ceiling, although it was ₹15,000 until 16 September 2026.
