Frequently Asked Questions
How is German wage tax worked out?
The calculator follows the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) 2026 programme for machine wage tax calculation (Programmablaufplan) for a yearly pay period: allowances for employees and tax class, a provision for social insurance (Vorsorgepauschale), then the 2026 income tax tariff with a basic allowance of 12,348 €. Its results match the BMF test table for 2026.
What do the tax classes mean?
Class I is for single people, II for single parents, III and V for married couples where one earns much more (III gets the joint tariff, V pays more), IV for married couples with similar pay, and VI for a second job. Class II and the child options assume you qualify.
When is the solidarity surcharge (Soli) charged?
Only if your yearly wage tax is above 20,350 € (40,700 € in class III). Above that it phases in at 11.9% of the excess until it reaches the full 5.5%. Child allowances reduce the base for Soli and church tax but not the wage tax itself.
What social insurance do employees pay in 2026?
Health 7.3% plus half your insurer's additional rate (average 2.9% in 2026), care 1.8% plus 0.6% if you are childless (2.3% in Saxony), pension 9.3% and unemployment 1.3%. Health and care stop at 69,750 € a year; pension and unemployment at 101,400 €. With two or more children under 25, care falls by 0.25% per child from the second to the fifth.
What is not included?
Private health insurance, mini-jobs and the reduced contributions for low monthly pay (Übergangsbereich, midi-jobs), tax-free allowances entered with the tax office, company pensions, the special method for one-off payments, and the employer's levies (U1, U2, insolvency).
Is this an official BMF calculator?
No. This is an estimate, not tax advice. Your final income tax is set in your tax return. Check your payslip or the BMF tax calculator (bmf-steuerrechner.de) and your tax office for exact figures.
